CGCM 2025 Advent Daily Devotional Plan

The 2025 Advent season begins tomorrow (November 30). As in previous years, the church will continue to launch an Advent daily devotional plan, hoping to help everyone prepare for the coming of Christmas through daily devotions. This year, the church has selected devotional materials from Christianity Today‘s 2024 Advent series. Additionally, just like last year, the church’s 11 fellowships will take turns producing daily short devotional videos, following the alphabetical order of their fellowship names. We hope that through these various means, we can help everyone more easily cultivate the habit of daily devotion to draw near to God and prepare themselves to meet the Lord.

My dear family in Christ,

I’m writing to you today with a heavy heart. I know we are all shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic news—that the political commentator Charlie Kirk was assassinated on September 10th. This terrible act of violence has not only taken a life but has also cast a dark shadow over our nation, which is already so full of tension.
Right now, I’m sure you’re feeling a mix of emotions—sadness, anger, fear, and confusion. That is completely understandable. As your pastor, I want to use God’s unchanging Word to help guide us on how to see this event from a heavenly perspective, and to find the comfort and wisdom that only He can give in the middle of a tragedy.

First, as a church that holds to the truth of the Bible, we clearly and strongly condemn all forms of violence and murder. God gave us a clear command: “You shall not murder” (Exodus 20:13). Human life is sacred because we are all made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27). It doesn’t matter what a person’s political views, words, or public status are; no one has the right to violently take another person’s life. This act of murder is a complete and total sin, and it stands against everything God created and desires.

Therefore, our church’s position is this:

• Pray for the victim’s family: We lift up our deepest prayers for Mr. Kirk’s family, friends, and all who loved him. We ask for the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ to comfort them and give them a supernatural peace in this time of unbearable pain.

• Pray for justice: We are thankful that news reports today have confirmed a suspect has been arrested. We pray that God will continue to guide our justice system, so that the truth will come to light and justice will be served. But we also pray for a deeper justice and peace to come to our land, which is so full of bitterness and division.

• Pray for our nation: We must follow the Bible’s teaching to pray “for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1 Timothy 2:2). We pray for our country’s leaders, asking God to give them the wisdom to lead us out of this spiral of hatred and toward reconciliation.

However, beyond our prayers and grief, we need to be spiritually alert. In moments like this, the enemy, Satan, loves nothing more than to plant seeds of division and hatred right inside the body of Christ—the Church.

I know that Charlie Kirk was a very controversial figure. Here in our own church, I’m sure some of you agreed with his ideas and saw him as a brave defender of faith and values. You are feeling his loss deeply. I’m also sure that there are others among us who completely disagreed with his actions and words, believing he only made the division in our society worse. These different opinions are real. But today, as your pastor, I must seriously warn you with God’s Word: We must not let this tragedy become an excuse to attack or demonize each other within our church family.

To those of you who support Donald Trump or agree with Charlie Kirk’s ideas, I understand your anger and pain right now. You may be strongly tempted to label other Christians who think differently as “compromised,” “not spiritual,” or even somehow responsible for this tragedy. I am begging you, please resist that temptation! That is the logic of the world, not the way of Christ. Jesus taught us to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). How, then, can we turn around and treat our own brothers and sisters in the same church with hatred and bitterness? When we place our political alignment above our unity in Christ, we fall right into the devil’s trap. It grieves God and destroys our witness to the world.

And to those of you who disagreed with Mr. Kirk, we need to search our own hearts too. In this tragedy, is there any secret satisfaction or coldness in our hearts? Have we forgotten that a soul created in God’s image is gone? Let’s ask the Lord to expose any sense of gloating or judgment in us.

So, what should we do?

First, let’s return to our true leader—Jesus Christ. Our primary identity is a citizen of heaven, a saint bought by the precious blood of Christ. Our identity as an American, and certainly any political label, comes long after that. When we lift Jesus high, we realize that the divisions that seem so huge in the world look very small at the foot of the cross.

Second, let’s practice the new command to love one another. Jesus said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34-35). At a time when our country is full of hate, the church must be a living example of love. Go out of your way to care for a brother or sister you disagree with. Listen to their feelings instead of trying to win an argument. Let the world see that in Christ, we have a love that is bigger than politics.

Third, put your hope on the Eternal Rock. Politicians come and go, nations rise and fall, but only God’s Kingdom will last forever. Our ultimate hope is not in the victory of any political party, but in the return of our Lord Jesus Christ and His eternal kingdom of justice and peace.
Brothers and sisters, this is a hard time, but it is also a time that tests the depth of our faith. Let’s not get swept away by the currents of this world. Instead, by the power of the Holy Spirit, let’s be people who “make peace” (Matthew 5:9) in this dark age. May our church, CGCM, be a place of healing, not a place that makes the wounds deeper, because of our unity and love in Christ.

If you are struggling with this news and need prayer, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any of the church pastors or elders.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Your Pastor,

Yaochien Chen

    Advent
【Walking with Jesus: Devotions for Advent & Christmas】為每日靈修材料。

Devotional Prayer Plan for CGCM Advent 2024
    Advent means coming.
It is a time when we reflect on the moment in history when Jesus came into the word as a baby two thousand years ago.
It is also a time when we can allow Him to come into our hearts in more meaningful ways today.
For all of us, Advent could be a time of preparation which provides an opportunity to experience Christmas—the glow of the candles, the celebration of the birth, and the beauty of the story of God using ordinary people in extraordinary ways—for more than a day.

Traditionally, Advent begins the fourth Sunday before Christmas (usually right after Thanksgiving in November) and focuses on four themes. For this year, those themes are:

Hope

Peace

Joy

Love

This year, we will adopt “Walking with Jesus: Devotions for Advent & Christmas” to be our devotional resource. In every morning, there is one brother/sister of CGCM leading the devotion.

I invite and encourage all my brothers and sisters at CGCM to join this Advent devotional praying plan to read, mediate, pray and walk in Christ every day. Let us have a different Christmas this year and prepare to walk with the Lord in the new year.

Please save the playlist of Bible readings for the Advent and open the CGCM YouTube channel notification. New Bible reading videos will be released at 6am every morning.
